SOT, Uptown Fashion Week attendee (English): “Two-thirds of the population is a size 14 or larger. Someone has to dress us, we want to look nice and pretty too. So how do you have a fashion week and don’t include the majority? That’s ridiculous. So I think this is really good what the producers are doing, whether they know it or not, they’re lighting a fire.”

SOT, Uptown Fashion Week attendee (English): “We’re here, we’re not going anywhere and if you look around everyone is getting bigger, they’re not getting smaller. Someone has to dress these women and it should be about money, cause there’s a lot of money to be made in this segment of the population.”

SOT, Plus-sized model (English): “The vast majority of people are plus-sized, I mean, for better and for worse we need plus-size events because there’s plus-sized people. It’s actually pretty simple and the part of the fashion industry that doesn’t get it, they’re losing money.”

Plus-size models dressed in haute couture and contemporary styles graced the NYC Uptown Fashion Week (NYUFW) catwalk at United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights for the first time on Friday.

Models and attendees referred to the vast majority of the population being plus-sized, stressing the lucrative aspect of embracing the fuller figures in the fashion industry.

Now in its fourth year, NYUFW coincides with New York Fashion Week (NYFW) but has set itself apart this year by opening the floor to plus-size models.
