A Pete Fatovich Appreciation on Letterman, 1982-2015, Part 2 of 2: Main Course

0

After working on The Tonight Shows with Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, then later on SNL, Pete Fatovich became Dave’s Associate Director and occasional Acting Director from the first Late Night in February 1982 until he retired on Late Show in late December 1993. He then continued to participate in Late Show comedy segments until the Fall of 2014.

Long-running Late Night Head Writer Steve O’Donnell recently told me how sad he felt that when Pete died at nearly 85 on May 23, 2015, he hadn’t been given a tribute eulogy from Dave on the Late Show. That would have been impossible, since Pete had passed away three days after Dave’s final show. (Pete’s daughter Mandy did report that Pete had been able to watch it.)

So here’s my attempt to rectify that. For a man everyone on both Late Night and Late Show loved and adored.

“Yes. Actually, that was one of the last days I worked on Letterman. I was pregnant with my second son, and this was Dave’s ‘gift’ to me, as we were paid for speaking appearances. Needless to say, I am terribly afraid of ‘on-camera’ appearances.”
